Joomla! vs. Drupal vs. WordPress

Lynda.com now has videos available on the most popular open-source programs for publishing content. There’s the one on Joomla! I recorded, one on WordPress by Maria Langer, and now one on Drupal by Tom Geller. So which one is right for your next site? Sign up for an Online Training Library account today and find out!

For $25, you get a month-long subscription where you can watch all of our videos in their entirety and as many times as you wish. You will also have access to the rest of the video library which covers topics like Flash, HTML, Photoshop, CS3, and Search Engine Optimization. Use Lynda.com to learn everything you need to know for launching your next site!

UPDATE: As Maria pointed out in the comments, you can watch the first few videos of each Lynda.com title for free. This will give you a general feel for each system.

Last Thursday, I checked out Lynda.com to see if there was a Joomla class. The closest I could come up with was Tom Geller’s Drupal course so I watched the first six lessons. I hadn’t used WAMP and MAMP before so learning those utilities will prove useful in the future. I’m really pleased to see your course online, Joseph. I can’t wait to get into it since I just did a Joomla! 1.5 installation this past week in preparation for migrating two sites.

    Thanks for checking it out!

  • Hey, Joseph! Thanks for the mention. I watched several of your videos to prepare for the Drupal series, so don’t be surprised if you see a bit of influence. :)

(BTW, I gained an appreciation for Joomla for a week or so before switching to Drupal. I see them as having differences mainly of style, not quality.)

Thanks for stopping by Tom! Yes, Drupal and Joomla! have two very different approaches for solving similar problems. It all boils down to the workflow you envision for managing your site.

  • Thanks for the plug! I hope your readers stop by Lynda.com and at least check out the free sample lessons of the courses.

Here are some real time trends that might provide some insight as to what’s going down on the street…for the record, I’m a WordPress guy who’s thinking about switching to Joomla.

I am a member of lynda and have been trying to figure out which CMS I should use. I have been using WordPress for many of my projects but WPs offerings are limited (or at least different) compared to Drupal and Joomla. My office is having me learn Drupal. Tom’s tutorial is great! I went through the whole thing and feel like I have a solid understanding of the workflow.
HOWEVER, there is no Lynda.com tutorial for building Drupal Themes! As a designer, by far learning how to “theme” is the most important factor in which CMS to use. There is a Joomla tutorial on theme templates, and I will take that one very soon. Right now I am focusing on learning Drupal theme building and styling and I have come a long way. But I would love to see a tutorial on building Drupal themes on Lynda.com.
